Verification Becomes Infrastructure, and AI Goes Live | August ’26 AI Bulletin
Pete Gatenby – August 2026
Overview
Six banks, the same six that built Open Banking, have started turning KYC checks into shared infrastructure. This month’s AI Bulletin looks at the bank-app verification pilot, agentic AI in live operation, and what both mean for lenders.
The Challenge
The Government scrapped its national digital ID card in July. The verification rails lenders use are separate and advancing: with UK Finance, the banks moved app-based verification into pilot, sharing name, age or address with consent from records they already hold. Everyone else faces a choice: join the rail, or pay rent on it.
AI Moves into Live Operation
techUK’s June report documents agentic AI, systems that carry out tasks end to end, in production. One bank’s fraud contact centre cut call handling times to a third, with no rise in fraud. In the FCA’s live tests, agents are initiating payments and AI-led anti-money-laundering is running across the property market.
Evidence That Travels
Both depend on evidence that travels. That is Horizontal Digital Integration: data and evidence flowing across every party in a transaction instead of being rebuilt at each handoff. The rail is live first, agents are next, and CFIT is already mapping property data. Checks lenders already run become an asset the whole transaction relies on.
Two Steps for Lenders This Month
First, on verification: map where your journey re-proves what is already proven, decide what certified verification you will accept as evidence instead of re-collecting documents, and give financial crime the UK Finance pilot to assess; expressions of interest are open. Second, on AI: pick one contained, high-volume process and get an agentic pilot live under governance this quarter. The FCA’s cohort firms are already there.
Faster completions and fewer fall-throughs go to the lenders who reuse what is proven and let governed AI act.
